What makes an arrangement read as autumn

Colour does most of the work, and the useful distinction is warmth versus season. Plenty of bright orange flowers are summer flowers — a tropical orchid or a coral rose is warm, but it reads as a holiday rather than as October. Autumn is the duller, deeper end of the same range: rust, bronze, amber, burnt peach, cream, and yellows with some brown in them rather than neon.

Texture is the other half. Fall arrangements are denser and less symmetrical than spring ones — clustered heads, visible stems, greenery that has gone leathery rather than fresh. A bouquet you could photograph on a wooden table next to a candle is roughly the test.

The flowers we use

• Chrysanthemums — the autumn flower, and not only by association: they genuinely peak in fall. White, bronze and yellow mums hold their shape for well over a week, which is longer than almost anything else on this list.
• Warm garden roses — peach, apricot and cream, open and ruffled rather than tight. The shape is what separates a garden rose from a florist rose, and it is why they suit this season.
• Sunflowers — late summer into autumn, and the one stem that makes an arrangement feel like a harvest rather than a gift shop.
• Gerbera daisies in orange and rust — cheerful without being bright, and they photograph well against the mums.
• Seasonal greenery and berry — eucalyptus that has silvered, hypericum berry, and dried grasses where the arrangement can carry them.

Thanksgiving, and the rest of the season

Autumn flowers and Thanksgiving flowers overlap but they are not the same order. A Thanksgiving arrangement is usually a centrepiece, wanted on a specific date, and low enough to see across; an autumn arrangement is for any week between September and the end of November and can be any shape. If you are hosting, order the centrepiece a few days out — that week is the busiest of our year after Valentine's.

Chrysanthemums are the most forgiving thing we sell — change the water every couple of days and they will outlast the arrangement around them. Keep anything with roses in it out of direct sun and away from a heating vent, which is the one autumn-specific mistake.
